What are dentures?
Denture are experts in replacing the missing teeth and gums. They are removable appliances that look just like natural teeth. With the Denture Clinic in Clayton you can restore the cosmetic appeal of your smile and also enjoy normal eating and speaking functions.
As the name suggests, complete dentures are recommended when you have all teeth missing and partial dentures are used when you are missing a tooth or a few teeth. At Waverley Denture Clinic, we make customised dentures to meet the needs of our patients all over Clayton and the surrounding area.
Types of dentures
Depending upon the material used dentures are often called different names, such as acrylic dentures, flexible dentures and metal based dentures.
Acrylic dentures are the most affordable, however are more prone to breakage than a metal based denture. Another shortfall of acrylic dentures is over time the denture can settle on the gums whereas metal based dentures uses a metal rest to hold the denture in its original position. This means that flexible and acrylic dentures are not really suitable for patients with gum disease. The most comfortable and most aesthetically pleasing denture is the flexible denture and they are more affordable than metal based dentures.

Procedure of fitting dentures
Denture placement is a 4 step procedure:
- A skilled prosthetist takes the impression of your mouth. The impressions are analysed to identify the gap between the teeth and how well the teeth are related to one another. An appropriate treatment plan is developed and discussed with the patient and the denture type is chosen.
- The prosthetist prepares a wax model from the impression. The wax model is used to prepare provisional wax based dentures. At this stage the matching of tooth colour is done or if full dentures are being made a preferred tooth colour is chosen.
- A fitting is then done and when the fit is finalised the denture is then made.
- The denture is then fitted into the patient’s mouth and any final adjustments are made.
Depending on the type of dentures required this process from beginning to end may take between 1-4 weeks.
Further it is quite common for additional adjustments to be required after the final fitting as the denture settles, or as you become used to the denture.
At our clinic these adjustments are charged with no “gap” fee so in most cases these adjustments are free.
Who is the right candidate for the dentures?
- Accidents for sports injuries
- Tooth decay
- Advanced gum disease (periodontitis)
Caring for your dentures
Keep the denture clean: Just like your natural teeth, brush your dentures twice a day using a soft or medium toothbrush. We would also advise you to remove them after the meal and rinse them thoroughly with warm water.
Overnight protection: While it was previously recommended to remove your dentures and place them in a bowl of water in the evening it is possible to continue to wear them overnight provided they are kept clean as mentioned above.
